How To Become A Precinct Chair

Thank you for your interest in being a Gillespie County Republican precinct chair! The role of precinct chair is vital to the continued growth and success of our Party. A precinct chair is uniquely positioned to be the foremost representative of the Republican Party to voters in your neighborhood. You – the Precinct Chair – can become the political leader of your community.

Precinct chairs represent the GOP and help organize and win elections for Republicans in their precincts. The precinct chair’s primary job is to maximize the Republican vote in the precinct. The Party provides training and support to help you do just that.

Precinct chairs are also expected to attend the bi-monthly County Executive Committee meetings. Attendance is vital because it counts towards a quorum for conducting official Party business.

A precinct chair is expected to serve as an election judge in the precinct, or to recruit someone who can serve. The precinct chair also convenes the Republican precinct convention after the biennial Primary Election.

Any Republican voter can run for precinct chair in the Republican primary! To be a precinct chair, a person must be a registered voter residing in that precinct. Republican precinct chairs are elected by Republican primary voters in their precinct every two years. And an unopposed precinct chair candidate is elected automatically!

Between primary elections, vacant precinct chair positions are filled by appointment (see below).

Vacancy appointments (between primary elections): Under Texas law, a precinct chair vacancy can only be filled by a majority vote at a Gillespie County Republican Executive Committee meeting with a quorum. The Executive Committee consists of the Republican County Chair and all current Gillespie County Republican precinct chairs.

If the Executive Committee approves your nomination, you will immediately be the Precinct Chair for your precinct and part of the Executive Committee until the next Republican primary election, which occurs every even-numbered year. You would then have to run in the primary to be elected chair for a full two-year term.

Thanks again for your interest. Please contact us if you have questions about this process. We look forward to hearing from you!
